Dr. Robert Llizo presents, “How Athens Became A Suburb of Jerusalem: The Bible And Greek Philosophy",” a course for adults introducing them to basic philosophy imbedded within the Bible by its authors and used by early commentators, preachers, apologists, and pastors (the Church Fathers).
This course will be a quick survey through the history of Greek philosophy, beginning with the Pre-Socratics (particularly Heraclitus of Ephesus) to Plato and Aristotle, and how these ideas influenced some of the biblical writers. Some of the topics we will cover will be faith and reason in the Bible, the first confrontation between Greek and Hebrew cultures in the Maccabees, its resolution under the Ptolemies in Egypt, with particular attention to Philo of Alexandria, and Philo’s (possible) influence on St. Paul. The early Apostolic Fathers, especially St. Justin Martyr, will also be considered.
This is designed to help us, modern Catholic Christians living in a secular world with secular assumptions, learn to read the Scriptures as they were intended to be read. There is no reason to embrace the false dichotomies of “faith vs. science,” or “physical vs. spiritual,” that so many take for granted as truth. This course should help in bridging the gaps!
