ABOUT: Examining the reasons behind why one looses or does not embrace faith, Prof. Joe Hargrave will discuss the weaknesses that the various types of atheism present, the history of the modern so-called "New Atheist" movement as well as the more classic forms that began after the Enlightement and peaking during Existentialism, and his own conversion from atheism to Catholicism including his time spent as a registered member of the Socialist Equality Party (a Trotskyist Marxist political party in the United States).
Atheism is on the rise in western civilization due to several factors, including a rise of scientific explanations and the assumption of its necessary opposition to religion. There is also a growing ignorance of classical philosophy (Platonism or its subgroups like Aristotelianism or Thomism), and a focus on materialism (the philosophical monist position opposing the philosophical monist position, spiritualism). Many Catholics leave the Church and ultimately end up atheists for not only the reasons above, but also due to the fact they have largerly never encountered, much less learned and practiced, their faith in an intellectually robust manner incorporating the Four-Fold Method of interpretation of Scriptures, the Catholic Humanist tradition of merging faith and science via reason, or how to incorporate the wisdom of the Church Fathers with different philosophies as the handmaid of theology.
Prof. Hargrave is a professor of Political Science at Rio Salado College and is a member of Blessed John Henry Newman Catholic Church.
